Construction nails. It is the most widespread type of nail , they have long and straight rods with a small asperities near the head, and it improves the quality of connection. The head is small in comparison with the length of the nail (length is 12-300 mm). Producers recommend that nails which remaine inside the construction , would be zinc-coated. Nails outside the coating (“black”) are only fit for temporary or concealed fastening, since the drips of rust appear even after contact with air.

Finishing nails. They are nails with a very small head, which are suitable for the fastening of plates, batten, platbanding of doors and windows and plinths. When it is desirable, the nail is little noticeable as possible.
Screw nails. They are intended for supple and flexible because of moisture and loads constructions .They include the external upholstering of buildings, fastening of floor and moorage constructions. Screw nails have flat or conical (secret) head. Strength of connection grows in 4 times in comparison with the usual construction nail.

Wire brush nails. They are used, when construction requires especially large fastening power, for installation of perforated fasteners, for inner facing and window slopes. On the nail there is a transverse incision, due to which the fastening grows in 5 times in comparison with the usual nail. The wire brush nails have flat or conical (secret) head.

Nail with the large flat head. They are used for the astening of different roofings, wind-proof plates, siding, bituminous materials, construction cardboard and similar materials. The large head retains well porous materials on the spot, without breaking their surface.

Usual nails are made from thermally unprocessed steel and even from steel wire (soft). They are marked with two numbers: the first indicates the diameter of the rod, the second - length in millimeters. They have a flat smooth or chequered head. Wire nails with the countersunk head are used when it is necessary to hide head. Nailing with the core drill, it is possible to prepare the surface of board for further filling.

Chequered, screw, clubs nails and wire brushes for hanging pictures have rods with the longitudinal, transverse, spiral grooves, dents or agnails. They possess a large resistibility to extraction.
It is possible to drive nails from tempered (hardened) steel into walls of brick and even light concrete. But these nails are brittle and it is necessary to consider the work involved.

Clinkers, tar paper and upholsterer’s nails are applied for the fastening of low-strength materials to the rigid base. They have a shorter rod and the wide flat head.

Depending on the sphere where nail will be used, there can be:

  • zinc-coated nail
  • copper nail (less prone to corrosion)
  • nail from the alloy steel (it does not rust generally).

Driving nails into - this is the entire learning.

The certain encyclopedia of driving nails was developed by German specialist Frank Nipple. There are several councils given below and they can be useful to you in driving nails.

  • If you do not want the hammer to leave dents on the surface of the component, wall, board, etc., you should use a jackhammer.
  • In driving small nails you should use special contrivances.
  • the rod of a nail 2/3 of it’s length must enter into the lower body of the fastened components (Fig. 3).
  • In order not to split a board with a thick nail, its sharp tip should be made a little chamfered .
  • The nails, hammered into-the mitre, make the joint of components more durable (Fig. 1).
  • In “clean” surfaces the head of nail must be recessed and glazed (Fig. 1).
  • Nail under the load is driven into into the wall on-the-mitre top down.
  • The tip of the nail extends all the way through it .It is good to bend with the help of old angular file (Fig. 2).
  • If the component is subject to dismantling, then it is better to use a screw insread of a nail.

The method of secret nailed connection

Figure 2 shows the secret method of nailed connection. The sequence of actions is:

  • The shaving is being cut and bended with a chisel , and it is being driven into the nail with the unwedged head under it.
  • The shaving is being sunk and pasted.

Pulling nails out

In this case under the naildrawer , clips that are touching the surface of board, it is necessary to lay the plate for a decrease in the putting pressure .
